Hi Reader,

In another episode of "always setting myself up for success," I'm hitting send on a newsletter on a Friday afternoon.

(I really hope you're already offline for your weekend, and that this isn't buried in your inbox when you get back Monday!)

It's been a very long stretch of travel lately (plus some really rad client offsites), and I have a ton to catch up on. But I didn't want to wait to get you this latest episode in my "No-BS OKRs Basics" YouTube series — tackling a question I hear from leaders ALL THE TIME:

"What’s the real difference between OKRs and KPIs?"

Here's the thing: I see organizations mixing these up constantly, and it's one of the fastest ways to completely undermine your goal-setting efforts.

The short version?

KPIs are your business vital signs—they tell you if things are healthy or if something needs attention.

Key results are your improvement experiments—they challenge you to actually make things better.

But here's where people get tripped up: they go straight to their existing KPIs and just... call them key results. That's not how this works.

In this week's video and blog post, I break down:

  • Why starting with "what can we measure?" leads to unfocused goal lists
  • The one question I use with leadership teams to cut through metrics confusion
  • When a KPI should become a Key Result (and when it definitely shouldn't)

If you've ever felt like your organization's OKRs are just the same old KPIs with shiny new labels—this one's for you.

Or if, like me, you're a words person and not a video person: check out the blog post here.

I'd love to hear what you're seeing in your organization—are you struggling with the KPI/OKR distinction? Hit reply and let me know. I read every message personally.

Now go have a wonderful weekend (or a great start to your Monday)!
